Animals use many ways to get rid of waste. This is called excretion. Mammals use kidneys to make urine. This urine leaves through a tube called the urethra. Animals also use their lungs and skin.

Birds do things differently. They make uric acid. This is a thick paste. It helps birds save water. It also stays safe inside an egg. Some seabirds use salt glands in their noses. They let salt out through their nostrils.

Insects have a special way too. They use Malpighian tubules. These are tiny tubes. They move waste to the intestines. Then the waste leaves with feces. Plants also excrete. They let oxygen out through small holes. Some plants even drop leaves to get rid of waste.
