Birds do things differently. They make uric acid. This is a thick paste. It helps birds save water. It also stays safe inside an egg. Some seabirds use salt glands in their noses. They let salt out through their nostrils.

These substances are forced from the interior of the plant. This happens due to hydrostatic pressures and the absorptive forces of plant cells. Deciduous plants have another way to manage waste through leaf-fall. During the pre-abscission phase, these plants excrete by shedding their leaves. This shows how excretion can be tied to the life cycles of different organisms. Whether through the lungs, skin, or specialized tubules, excretion is a fundamental biological necessity. It separates the useful processes of metabolism from the harmful substances they leave behind.
