Despite this separation, some mammals retain a cloaca into adulthood. Monotremes, which are egg-laying mammals, possess a true cloaca. Some marsupials also show traces of this structure. In most marsupials, the genital tract is separate from the anus, but an external trace remains. This trait suggests a connection to the ancient amniotes from which mammals evolved. The marsupial mole is a unique exception because it possesses a true cloaca. This specific detail has led some to argue that it is not a true marsupial.
