Excretion

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

All living things must get rid of waste. This important thing is called excretion. Inside your body, chemical reactions happen all the time. This is called metabolism. These reactions create many different waste products. They make things like water, salts, and carbon dioxide. They also make urea and uric acid. If these wastes build up, they can harm the body.

Excretion works by moving these wastes out of the body. In mammals, the kidneys and liver help clear the blood. The kidneys then turn these substances into urine. This urine travels through a tube called the urethra. Other wastes leave the body as feces through the anus. Vertebrates also use their lungs and skin to excrete. This keeps the inside of the body safe and clean.

Different animals use different ways to handle their waste. Aquatic animals live in water. They can excrete ammonia directly into their environment. Ammonia dissolves very well in water. Land animals must do things differently. Ammonia is toxic and they have less water. They use a process called detoxification to turn it into urea. This is much less harmful to them.

Birds and insects have their own special methods. Birds excrete nitrogenous waste as a thick uric acid paste. This helps them save water and stay safe in eggs. Some seabirds even use salt glands in their noses. Insects use tiny tubes called Malpighian tubules. These tubules move waste into the intestines. Then the waste leaves the body with fecal matter.

Plants also participate in excretion in their own ways. During photosynthesis, plants make oxygen as a byproduct. This oxygen exits through small holes called stomata. Some plants also move resin, sap, or latex out of their bodies. These materials move through pressure inside the plant. Deciduous plants even excrete by letting their leaves fall. Every living thing has a way to stay clean.
