Urination

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Urination is how the body gets rid of liquid waste. This process is also called micturition or voiding. In mammals, urine leaves the bladder through a tube called the urethra.

Other animals use a different opening called a cloaca. This is a key part of the urinary system's job to clean the body. Most healthy adults urinate up to seven times every day. In some animals, this act also helps mark their territory.

The way it works happens in two main stages. First is the storage phase, where the bladder holds the liquid. The bladder has a special muscle called the detrusor. This muscle stays relaxed so the bladder can stretch and hold more.

As the bladder fills, stretch receptors send signals to the spinal cord. When the bladder is full, you feel a conscious urge to go. This is a signal from your brain that it is time to act.

Second is the voiding phase, which is when the urine is released. This starts when you send a voluntary signal from your brain. The brain tells the pontine micturition center to start the process.

This causes the detrusor muscle to contract and squeeze the bladder. At the same time, the sphincters, which are like small doors, relax. The urine then flows out through the urethra. This continues until the bladder is empty and the muscles relax again.

Scientists and doctors have studied this for a long time. In the past, doctors used urine to help find illnesses. One famous painting shows a physician named Constantine the African.

He is shown accepting urine samples for diagnosis. Today, we know much more about the nerves involved. We know that the brain, the spinal cord, and the nerves all work together. This includes parts like the cerebral cortex and the sacral spinal cord.

You can think of the bladder like a stretchy balloon. As you fill a balloon with water, it gets bigger but the pressure stays low. This is because the bladder is highly compliant, meaning it stretches easily.

This helps you go through your day without feeling constant pressure. Even though the bladder size changes, the time it takes to urinate stays similar for many animals. For most land mammals, it takes about 21 seconds on average. This is a very organized system that keeps your body healthy.
