Urination

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Your body makes waste that must leave. This waste is called urine. It stays in a part called the bladder.

The bladder has two main stages. The first is the storage phase. During this time, the bladder holds the urine. The bladder wall has a muscle called the detrusor. This muscle stays relaxed so the bladder can stretch.

As it fills, you feel a full feeling. This signal travels to your brain.

The second stage is the voiding phase. This is when you urinate. You can choose to start this. Your brain sends a signal to the bladder. The detrusor muscle then squeezes. At the same time, small doors called sphincters relax. These doors open to let urine pass through the urethra.

Most adults go up to seven times a day. Some animals use urine to mark their space. Small babies do not have control yet. They go when the reflex happens. They learn to control it by age two or three.
