It is a hollow bag made of muscle. It sits in your pelvis, which is the low part of your body. Its main job is to store urine. Urine comes from your kidneys. It travels through two tubes called ureters. These tubes lead into the bladder.

The bladder is very stretchy. It has folds in its walls called rugae. These folds let the bladder expand as it fills up. A typical adult bladder holds 300 to 400 mL of urine. This is when you feel the urge to go. The bladder wall has a thick muscle layer. This is the detrusor muscle. It stays relaxed while the bladder fills. When it is time to go, the muscle contracts. This squeeze pushes the urine out through a tube called the urethra.

Sometimes, the bladder can get an infection. This is called cystitis. It can cause pain or make you feel like you must go very often. Doctors can use medicine to help fix this.
