Sanitary sewers are underground pipe systems.

They carry waste from homes and shops. This waste goes to a treatment plant to be cleaned. Unlike some other pipes, they do not carry rain water. Rain goes into separate storm drains instead.

Most systems use gravity to move waste. The pipes tilt downward so the waste flows along.

Small pipes from buildings connect to these main lines. These smaller pipes are called laterals. To help people check the pipes, there are vertical tubes called manholes.

People use manholes to inspect the lines or fix problems. They also let out sewer gases through tall vent pipes.

Sometimes, gravity is not enough. If the ground is too flat, a lift station can help. This is a sump that lifts waste to a higher spot. Then, gravity can take over again.

Some cities use pumps to push waste through pipes. This is called a force main. These systems help keep our water clean and our towns healthy.
