Sanitary sewers are vital underground systems.

They move waste from houses and businesses to treatment plants. These pipes do not carry rainwater. Instead, rain goes into separate storm drains. This keeps the sewage from getting too thin. If sewage is diluted by rain, treatment is less effective. Separating these systems helps avoid overflows during heavy storms.

This keeps our environment much cleaner.

Most systems work using gravity.

Small pipes called laterals connect buildings to larger lines. These branch sewers run under streets. They flow into even larger pipes called trunk sewers. Eventually, these flow into interceptors. To help workers, manholes provide access to the pipes.

These vertical tubes allow for inspection and maintenance. They also help vent sewer gases away from people. Manholes allow pipes to change direction easily.

Sometimes, gravity alone cannot move the waste.

If a place is at a low elevation, a lift station helps. This is a sump that lifts waste to a higher spot. From there, gravity can take over again. Some systems use a force main to push waste. These are pipes made of steel or HDPE. They use pumps to move waste to distant areas. Other systems use vacuum pressure to move liquids.

History shows how these systems changed.

Long ago, cities used combined sewers. These carried both waste and rainwater together. This happened when water was plentiful. In the mid-20th century, many cities built separate sanitary sewers. This change helped make treatment plants more efficient. Many older cities still use the combined systems today. This is often because replacing them is very expensive.

Maintaining these pipes is a big job.

Pipes can crack or break as they age. This can cause leaks or backups. Workers can fix pipes without digging up every street. One way is using epoxy resin to make a "pipe in a pipe." Another way is called pipe bursting. This uses an expander head to pull a new pipe through an old one. These tools help keep our modern cities running smoothly.
