Sewerage

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A sewerage system is a vital network of pipes and structures. It moves waste and rainwater away from where people live. This system helps keep our water and our bodies safe.

Most cities use large pipes called sanitary sewers to carry waste. Some cities use combined sewer systems. These carry both sewage and stormwater in the same pipes. Other cities use separate pipes for waste and for rain.

These systems end at a treatment plant or a place where water is released.

How does the system work? It often uses gravity to move things along. Water flows down through pipes toward a lower point. Workers can reach these pipes through openings called manholes. These allow people to check on the system. Sometimes, systems use special tools like vacuum sewers. These do not rely only on gravity to move the waste. If a system is not built, homes might use septic tanks. These are small tanks that collect waste for later disposal.

People have been building these systems for a very long time. Early civilizations like the Babylonians used pits to catch rain. Around 2000 BC, the Indus valley civilization built something special. They made precise drains using bricks to line the streets. These drains carried waste away from homes. Later, huge cities like Rome and Constantinople built complex networks. Some of these old systems are still being used today.

Building these networks helped people realize they could stay much healthier.

Keeping these systems working is a big, expensive job. Pipes can break or leak over time. Tree roots can grow into the joints and cause trouble. In Germany, about 500 million m3 of dirty water leaks into the ground each year.

Fixing these leaks costs a lot of money. For example, Los Angeles County spends about €400 million every year on repairs. In Germany, the cost is about €100 million. Workers must clean the pipes using high-pressure water to fix them.

These systems are part of our modern world. They connect our homes to the wider environment. In the Netherlands, 99% of people are connected to a national system. In Germany, that number is 96%. Without these pipes, waste would flow directly into rivers. This could make people sick or hurt the animals in the water.
