Sewage is the wastewater created by a community of people. It comes from many places like homes, schools, and hospitals.

This water is moved through a system of pipes called sewers. There are two main kinds of sewage found in these systems. Greywater comes from things like showers, sinks, and laundry machines.

Blackwater is the water used to flush toilets. It carries human waste away from our living spaces. Sewage also contains soaps, detergents, and sometimes food waste from dishwashers.

Most sewage is actually made of water. It is about 99.9% pure water. The remaining 0.1% is made of solid matter.

These solids can be dissolved or they can be suspended in the liquid. About one-third of the solids are held up by turbulence. The rest are either dissolved or very tiny particles called colloids. Some of this solid matter is organic. This includes things like proteins, carbohydrates, and oils. We can measure how much organic matter is there using methods like Biochemical Oxygen Demand. This is also called BOD.

Sewage can also carry tiny living things called pathogens. These are germs that can cause sickness.

There are four main types of pathogens in sewage. These include bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths. Helminths are small worms that can exist as eggs. Scientists often look for a specific bacteria called Escherichia coli. This is also known as E. coli. It is an intestinal bacteria found in all warm-blooded animals. Finding high amounts of E. coli helps experts know if there is fecal contamination.

Many different things can change how sewage looks and acts. The amount of sewage made usually matches how much water people use. Factors like climate and water cost can change this. For example, warmer climates might lead to more water use. Sewage also contains nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus. If this is not cleaned, it can cause eutrophication in lakes. This is a process where too many nutrients pollute the water.

This can hurt the living things in the water.

We must manage sewage carefully to keep our world clean. It is collected and moved to treatment plants.

At these plants, the water is cleaned before it is released. It can be released into the soil or into water bodies. Some people even reuse the treated water for other tasks. There are different ways to dispose of it, like using land or marine outfalls.

However, all these options can still carry a risk of water pollution. We must always work to keep our water safe for everyone.
