A tunnel is a long and narrow passageway.

It can go deep under the ground or even under the sea. Most tunnels are completely enclosed. They usually only have openings at each end called portals.

Some tunnels are built for cars or trains to travel through. Others serve as sewers or aqueducts to move water. There are also utility tunnels. These carry things like electricity, steam, or phone cables.

Some tunnels are even built to help wildlife cross roads safely.

Building a tunnel is a very big job. Engineers must first study the ground to see what is underneath. They use tools to collect samples from deep holes. This helps them choose the best machines for the work. They might dig a small pilot tunnel first. This smaller path helps them test the ground before the main work begins.

Engineers also have to watch the stand-up time. This is how long a hole can stay open before it needs support. If the ground is too soft, it might collapse. Controlling groundwater is also a major part of the work.

People have been making tunnels for a very long time. It is likely that prehistoric people first made them by enlarging caves. One of the first artificial tunnels was built in Babylon around 2200 B.C. This tunnel joined a palace to a temple.

In the 6th century B.C., people built the Tunnel of Eupalinos in Greece. This was a tunnel used to carry water. Other early tunnels include the Siloam Tunnel in Jerusalem. Many early tunneling methods came from mining and military engineering.

There are many famous tunnels around the world today. The Atal Tunnel in India opened on October 4, 2020. It connects Manali and Keylang in the high mountains.

In the United States, the NFPA has a specific rule for what counts as a tunnel. They look at the length and the diameter of the structure. Some tunnels are much more expensive than bridges. For example, the Harbor Tunnel in Baltimore carries traffic under the water.

Tunnels can also be part of huge networks, like the Taipei Metro in Taiwan.

Sometimes, people choose to build a tunnel instead of a bridge. Bridges can be very high and hard to build over shipping paths. Tunnels can also help save beautiful views in a city.

In places like Manhattan, land is very expensive. A tunnel can be a smart way to move people without using much space on the surface. However, tunnels do have risks. Engineers must install ventilation systems to keep the air safe. They also build escape tunnels to help people get out during an emergency.
