An underwater tunnel is a path built partly or wholly under a sea or a river.

These tunnels are very important for moving people and goods. They are often used when building a bridge is not a good idea. They can also help by giving people a different choice from using a ferry. Some tunnels are short and carry cars on roads. Other tunnels are much longer and use electrified rail. This means they use electricity to run trains. Using electricity helps keep the air cleaner than using some fuels.

There are different ways to make these tunnels work. One way is called the immersed tube method. Workers place large steel tube segments into a trench on the sea floor. They join these pieces together in a long line. Then, they cover the tubes and pump the water out from the inside. Another way is to use a submerged floating tunnel. These tunnels use buoyancy, which is the force that helps things float. They stay under the water by being attached to the sea bed with columns or tethers.

People have been building these tunnels for a long time. The Thames Tunnel in London, England, is thought to be the oldest tunnel under a navigable river. It was built between 1825 and 1843. Later, the Mersey Railway Tunnel in Liverpool, England, became the oldest underwater rail tunnel. It was finished between 1881 and 1886. The Blackwall Tunnel in London is the oldest underwater tunnel for vehicles. It was built between 1892 and 1897.

Many famous tunnels exist all over the world today. The Seikan Tunnel in Japan is very long at 53.8 km. The Channel Tunnel connects England and France and has a 37.9 km undersea portion. In the USA, the Holland Tunnel was the longest continuous vehicular tunnel when it was first built. It crosses the Hudson River and was made between 1920 and 1927. The Transbay Tube in San Francisco is the longest underwater tunnel in North America. It is 5.8 km long and was built between 1965 and 1969.

Tunnels offer many benefits compared to other ways of traveling. A tunnel lets ships pass above without any trouble. A bridge might need to open or swing to let a big boat through. Tunnels also work well during harsh weather like high winds. Ferries can be stopped by strong winds or tides, but tunnels stay open. Tunnels are also much faster than ferries. For example, the Eurostar train takes only 21 minutes through the Channel Tunnel. A ferry might take 75 to 90 minutes for that same trip.
