An underwater tunnel goes under a river or the sea.

These tunnels help people move between places. They can carry cars or trains. Some tunnels are used for rail. Rail tunnels use electricity to run trains. This helps keep the air clean.

There are two main ways to build them. One way uses an immersed tube. Workers put big steel tubes in a trench on the sea floor. They join the tubes together. Then, they cover them and pump out the water. Another way uses a submerged floating tunnel. These tubes use buoyancy, which is a force that helps things float. The tubes stay under the water by using poles or ropes.

Tunnels have many benefits. They let ships pass easily. A bridge might need to move to let a big boat through. Tunnels stay open even in high winds. They are also faster than ferries. For example, the Eurostar train takes 21 minutes through the Channel Tunnel. A ferry might take much longer. However, tunnels cost a lot of money to build and keep safe. Fire is a danger in tunnels, so they must be built carefully.
