A pontoon bridge is a floating bridge.

It uses boats or floats to hold up a road. This road lets people and vehicles cross water.

These bridges work using buoyancy. Buoyancy is the power that makes things float in water. The floats must be strong enough to carry the weight. If the load is too heavy, the floats will sink.

Engineers must also plan for waves or storms. These can make the bridge sway or move in a dangerous way.

Most pontoon bridges are temporary. They are often used during wars or emergencies. However, some are permanent. They can carry heavy highway traffic. These are useful when the water is very deep.

People have used these bridges since ancient times. They were used in ancient China and by the Greeks. Many armies used them to cross rivers during big battles. Modern bridges use parts made in factories. These parts are often made of metal or concrete. They can also be made of wood or rubber.
