A pontoon bridge is a special kind of bridge that floats on water.

Instead of standing on tall pillars, it uses boats or floats to hold up a deck. This deck creates a path for people and vehicles to travel across.

These bridges are very helpful when the water is too deep for regular pillars. Most of these bridges are meant to be temporary for emergencies or wars. However, some are permanent and carry heavy highway traffic every day.

To understand how they work, we can look at a rule called Archimedes' principle. This rule says a float can support a weight equal to the water it pushes aside.

This weight includes the bridge itself and the cars driving on it. If the load becomes too heavy, the floats will sink under the water. Engineers must use flexible connections so one part can sink a little more than others. They also build the road to be light so the bridge can carry more. The paths connecting the bridge to the shore must not be too steep.

People have used these floating paths since ancient times. In China, the Zhou dynasty might have made them as early as the 11th century BC. Later, the Qin dynasty built more secure ones using iron chains.

In Greece, the writer Herodotus told stories about these bridges. Emperor Caligula even built a bridge at Baiae in 37 AD. This bridge was so long that he rode a horse across it. He wore special armor to show off during the ride.

History is full of famous moments involving these bridges. During the Middle Ages, many armies used them to move quickly. For example, the Hun army used a bridge in 442 to reach the city of Naissus. In 1218, Crusaders built two bridges across the Nile using 38 boats.

Even in more recent times, they have been used in many wars. The crossing of the Rhine in World War II is a famous example. They are still used in modern conflicts like the invasion of Ukraine.

Building these bridges has changed a lot over the years. Long ago, people used wooden planks and lashed barrels together. They used wooden beams called balks to connect the parts.

Today, engineers use parts made in factories called pre-fabricated structures. These can be made of metal, rubber, or even concrete. Some bridges are very sturdy, like the Galata Bridge in Istanbul. It was built in 1912 and worked for 80 years.
