Engineers work to provide safe, potable water. Potable means water that is safe to drink. They also manage waste and garbage in towns. This helps stop the spread of many diseases. In the 1850s, London had a big problem. More than 400,000 tons of sewage went into the river every day. This made people very sick with diseases like cholera.

Today, we use many smart steps to clean water. One way is called the activated sludge process. In this way, tiny living things called bacteria eat the waste. Later, workers use chlorine to kill the bacteria. Engineers also use UV light to kill germs.
