Building code

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Building codes are sets of rules for construction. They tell people how to build things safely. These rules help protect public health and safety. They make sure buildings are strong and healthy to live in.

Codes cover many parts of a building. They set rules for fire safety and exits. They also cover water, light, and air. Some codes help buildings stand during floods or earthquakes. They even help save energy.

Building blocks must meet safety rules.

People have used rules for a long time. The Code of Hammurabi is a very old set of rules. In ancient China, books said houses should be a certain length. In London, new rules helped after a great fire in 1666. These rules required houses to resist fire.

In the United States, many cities use model codes. A model code is a set of rules made by experts. A city then picks these rules to become law. This is called adoption by reference. Many states use the International Building Code. This helps keep things simple and safe.
