People have used law codes for a very long time. In the ancient Middle East, people wrote rules on clay tablets. Some of these date back to 2400 BC. In the Roman Empire, leaders made important codes. One was the Justinian Code. This code collected many old laws together.

In ancient China, the Tang Code was a big set of rules. It was made in 624 AD. Later, the Great Qing Legal Code was used from 1644 to 1912. In Africa, the Mali Empire used a charter called the Kouroukan Fouga. People kept these rules alive by telling them out loud.

In Europe, the French Napoleonic Code was made in 1804. This code helped shape laws in many other places. For example, Japan used French ideas to make its own code in 1898. Today, some countries use codes to cover all laws. Other countries use codes to cover just one area, like criminal law.
