This idea is very old. The Code of Ur-Nammu is the earliest surviving code. It was written in Babylon a long time ago. Later, a Roman leader named Justinian I made a code. His work became the basis for laws in Europe.

In the 1700s, new codes began to appear. Germany made several early versions. In 1804, France made the Napoleonic Code. This code was very important. Many countries used it. This included places in Italy, Spain, and Latin America.

Other codes were also very strong. The German Civil Code began in 1900. The Swiss Civil Code came in 1907. These codes used a very organized system. They helped shape laws in Japan, Turkey, and Greece. Today, many different lands still use these types of codes to help people live together.
