Bioreactor

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A bioreactor is a special manufactured system. It creates a controlled home for living things to grow.

These systems can hold tiny microbes or even larger cells and tissues. They are very important for making things like medicine, food, and fuel. Some bioreactors are huge, measuring many cubic metres. Others are small, called mini-bioreactors, with volumes below 0.5 litres. Most are made of stainless steel. This metal is great because it is easy to clean and keep sanitary.

Inside the machine, many steps happen to keep life healthy. First, a process called upstream processing prepares the raw materials. This might include making a liquid food called a medium. Then, the living things enter the bioreactor stage. An agitator stirs the liquid to keep everything mixed and even. A sparger adds bubbles of air or oxygen into the tank. This is vital because oxygen does not dissolve easily in water. A cooling jacket or special coils help keep the temperature steady. Finally, downstream processing separates the finished product from the waste.

Scientists use different ways to manage how these machines work. Some are called batch reactors, where everything is added at the start. Others are continuous, meaning new material flows in while old material flows out. In a continuous system, a device called a chemostat might be used. Some living things grow floating in a liquid. Other organisms are anchored to a surface through a method called immobilization. This keeps them from being washed away when the liquid leaves the tank. Large versions of these include a moving bed biofilm reactor.

There are many specific types of these systems for different jobs. A photobioreactor uses light to grow things like algae or moss.

These plants use light for energy through photosynthesis. Bioreactors are also used in sewage treatment to clean dirty water. They use tiny organisms to reduce the biochemical oxygen demand of the water. This makes the water safe enough to be used again. Some researchers even use them to grow heart tissue or muscle tissue. These special tools help scientists try to recreate organ-like structures.

Understanding bioreactors helps us see how science connects to our daily lives. When you eat certain foods or take medicine, a bioreactor might have helped make them. They are a key part of biochemical engineering. This field of study helps us improve agriculture, healthcare, and even how we handle waste. Even small tools like an Arduino can help control mini-bioreactors today. These machines turn raw materials into the useful things we need every day. They show us how we can work with nature to solve hard jobs.
