Doors and locks help keep the people and things inside safe. A group of people living together is called a household. This is usually a family, but it can be roommates too.

Inside, a house is often divided into different rooms. Most modern homes have a kitchen, a living room, and bedrooms. They also have bathrooms for washing. Some large houses might even have an indoor pool or a basketball court. In some farming societies, animals like chickens or cattle live in the house with humans.

Humans also build small homes for animals, like birdhouses or dog houses. Some houses are very large and hold many families, like townhouses. Other houses have extra buildings nearby, like a garage for cars.

History shows us how houses have changed over a very long time. We do not know exactly how the first houses began. However, we can find very old homes from the fifth millennium BC. One such home was found at Tell Madhur in Iraq.

An old Roman writer named Vitruvius thought the first buildings were made of wood and mud. In the Middle Ages, people lived in large manor houses. These homes were very social places. Families and servants often shared big halls for eating and sleeping.

During the Renaissance, Italian homes called palazzos had many connected rooms. You could walk from one room to another through many doors. This made the home feel very open. Later, architects began to build corridors, which are long hallways.

A corridor lets every room have its own door. This was a big change because it gave people more privacy. By the 17th century, Dutch houses became smaller and focused on the family. They wanted the home to be a place for rest, away from work.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, houses changed again as life became more modern. In the United States, some doctors used to work in a room at the front of their house.

Today, technology like computers can bring work into our homes. This makes it harder to keep work and home life separate. In some parts of the world, people build houses using recycled materials. In Manila, some houses are made from things found in garbage dumps.
