A residential garage is a walled and roofed structure designed to store vehicles.

These buildings serve as essential shelters for cars, protecting them from precipitation and theft. Because they provide security, many garages feature locking doors to prevent vandalism. Beyond vehicle storage, garages often function as multifunctional spaces for various household activities. People frequently use them as workshops for woodworking, painting, or mechanical assembly. They can also serve as storage areas for bicycles and lawnmowers, or even as social spaces known as "man caves."

There are two primary ways a garage relates to a home: attached or detached. An attached garage is part of the main house structure and often shares the same external materials and roofing. These structures typically include a "person door" or "man door," which allows people to enter the house directly from the garage. In contrast, a detached garage is a separate outbuilding or shed located away from the main residence.

In the rural United States, detached structures made of timber frames with sheet metal are often called "pole barns."

Modern garage doors use various mechanical systems to facilitate easy entry and exit. Many systems utilize an electrical mechanism that allows the door to open or close via a remote control. These doors often move on tracks toward the ceiling using an electric chain drive. To ensure safety, many modern doors include a detector that stops movement if an object is in the way. In Australia, a common design is the B&D Rolla Door, which has been used since 1956.

This door consists of a strong, corrugated steel sheet that slides up tracks and rolls around a drum mounted above the opening.

History shows that the concept of the garage has evolved alongside the automobile. The word "garage" entered the English language around 1902 from the French word "garer," meaning shelter.

In the early 20th century, these structures were often called "motor houses." Before 1914, many were pre-fabricated timber buildings. Early owners used garages to keep engines warm, as cars started more easily in the morning when they were not cold. By 1910, builders began using corrugated iron and asbestos instead of wood, making the structures less imposing.

Architects have long debated the best way to design these spaces. In 1908, architect Charles Harrison Townsend suggested using glazed brick for walls to make them easier to wash. He also recommended low air gratings because petrol fumes are heavier than air and can settle. In the United Kingdom, garage sizes vary, but large family cars like the Ford Mondeo require significant space. A Mondeo is about 4.7 meters long, meaning drivers often must park to one side to open their doors.

This shows how the growing size of vehicles influences architectural needs.

Garage dimensions are often strictly regulated by local standards and building codes. In the United States, a one-car garage typically ranges from 12 to 18 feet wide and 20 to 30 feet deep. A two-car garage is commonly 20 to 24 feet wide, while a three-car garage can be up to 36 feet wide.

Australia also has specific requirements, where a minimum single garage must be 3.0 m by 5.4 m. To comfortably fit two cars in a double garage in Australia, a size of 6.0 m by 6.0 m is often preferred.

Recent innovations have introduced new ways to construct these buildings. Companies now offer "portable garages" made of metal, wood, or vinyl that do not connect to a house.

These have evolved into modular garages, which are assembled in two sections at a factory and then combined on-site. Some partially prefabricated garages are even large enough to include an attic or a second floor. These advancements allow homeowners to add specialized vehicle or storage space with greater flexibility than traditional brick-and-mortar construction.
