Most of these stones were put in place a very long time ago. Some may be from 4500 BC. They are made of local granite. People made long rows called alignments. They also made stone tombs called dolmens. Some stones stand alone.

There are three big groups of stone rows. The Ménec rows are the most famous. The Kermario group has 1,029 stones. The Kerlescan group has 555 stones. People also built mounds of earth called tumuli. These mounds were used as tombs for very important people. These tombs held special things. They held stone axes made of jade. They also held beads made of blue stone. Some of these items came from far away by boat. This shows that the people had many ways to trade.
