Beira has a long and interesting history. It was first developed by the Portuguese Mozambique Company in the 19th century. The city was originally called Chiveve after a local river. It was later renamed to honor a Portuguese Crown prince named Dom Luís Filipe. He visited Mozambique in 1907. The city grew very quickly after that. In 1907, it was officially named a city. The Portuguese government took control of the city in 1942. Mozambique finally gained its independence from Portugal in 1975.

Many people live and work in this coastal city. In 1997, there were 397,368 people living there. By 2019, the population had grown to 530,604 people. This makes it the fourth-largest city in Mozambique. The city has many places for learning, like Zambeze University. There are also many different places for worship. You can find many Christian churches and also Muslim mosques.

Life in Beira can sometimes be difficult due to nature. In March 2019, a huge storm called Cyclone Idai hit the city. The winds were very strong, reaching 177 km/h. The storm caused flooding that was up to six meters deep. This damaged up to 90% of the city. The city also deals with a tropical savanna climate. This means there is a rainy season from November to April. People work hard to keep the city running and growing through these changes.
