The Second Matabele War was a major conflict that took place between 1896 and 1897. This war happened in a region that is now known as Zimbabwe.

It began as a fight between the Matabele people and the British South Africa Company, also called the BSAC. Later, the Shona people also joined the fight against the settlers. Many people were angry because of droughts and locust plagues. A spiritual leader known as the Mlimo helped lead this anger. He told the people that the settlers were responsible for these hard times.

The fighting started in March 1896. Some Matabele rebels started the uprising a few days earlier than planned. Nearly 2,000 Matabele warriors began the rebellion in earnest on March 24. They used many different weapons like rifles and battle-axes. As the news spread, the Shona people joined the fighting too. In the first week, 141 settlers died in Matabeleland and 103 died in Mashonaland. Many homes, ranches, and mines were also burned during this time. The war lasted for a long time until October 1897.

In the town of Bulawayo, the settlers had to protect themselves. They built a large circle of sandbagged wagons called a laager.

They added barbed wire and smashed glass bottles to help defend the area. About 1,000 women and children lived inside this crowded space. The settlers also sent out groups called the Bulawayo Field Force. These men, including Frederick Selous, rode out to rescue people in the countryside. They had to face many dangers while traveling through the land.

British leaders wanted to find the Mlimo to end the war quickly. They believed the Mlimo was the main leader for everyone fighting. Two scouts named Frederick Russell Burnham and Bonar Armstrong went on a mission. They traveled through the Matobo Hills at night to find a sacred cave.

They crawled on their bellies to stay hidden from the warriors. Once they found the cave, Burnham shot and killed the man inside. This man was believed to be the Mlimo, but some people were not sure.

After the Mlimo died, people had many different ideas about what happened. Some people in other countries called the scouts heroes. However, some people in Rhodesia were skeptical about the mission. They wondered if the man killed was truly the real Mlimo. Some historians think the leaders thought the Mlimo had more power than he actually did. An official inquiry was held to look into the event. This shows how complicated the history of the war really was.
