The war happened between 1904 and 1908. It involved the Herero and Nama people fighting against the German Empire. Some people call it the Herero uprising or the Namibian-German War. This conflict was part of a larger struggle against colonial rule. It changed the lives of many people living in the region forever.

Before the war, the land was home to many different groups. The Herero lived in the center and south. They were mostly cattle ranchers who moved with their animals.

The Nama people lived in the south. They were also mostly cattle ranchers. In the north, the Ovambo people lived near waterways and grew crops. Other groups like the San and Damara also lived there. These people had different ways of living and working.

Germany began to take control of the land in the 1880s. A man named Otto von Bismarck helped start this process.

A trader named Adolf Lüderitz bought land to start a port. He traded rifles and money to a local chief for it. By 1884, Germany claimed the area as a protectorate. Many German settlers moved to towns like Windhoek and Lüderitz. By 1903, there were about 4,682 European settlers in the area. Most of these settlers were from Germany.

Life became very hard for the native people under German rule. The settlers took much of the land for themselves. The legal system was also very unfair to the Herero and Nama. If a white settler hurt a native person, they rarely faced punishment. However, if a native person was involved in a crime, the punishment was very harsh.

Many people were treated poorly by employers and officials. These unfair rules and the loss of land led to great anger.

All of these problems led to the uprising in 1904. The Herero and Nama people fought back to protect their homes. The fighting was very intense and lasted for several years.
