Many people call it the Namibian language. It is the largest local language in Namibia. It belongs to the Ovambo people. These people live in southern Angola and northern Namibia. The language helps people share their culture and history. It is a very important part of life for them.

There are eight different dialects in this group. Two of these are used for writing. These written standards are called Kwanyama and Ndonga.

Other dialects include Kwambi and Ngandjera. There are also Mbalantu, Kwaluudhi, Kolonkadhi-Eunda, and Eunda. Each dialect is spoken in different areas. Some are in the north, while others are in the west or center.

History shows how these speakers moved across lands. Long ago, the Portuguese and German Empires drew borders. These lines cut through the Oukwanyama tribal area. This put some people in Angola and others in Namibia. Because of this, people move across the border often. The population of these areas is between 700,000 and 750,000 people. This number changes because of the movement.

Many people carry their language to new places. They often move to find jobs in mines. This happens in many towns across Namibia. For example, people live in the town of Lüderitz. This town is an 18-hour drive from Ovamboland. Even there, at least 50% of the people speak Oshiwambo. There are about one million speakers in total across both countries.

Oshiwambo is part of a bigger family of languages. It is closely related to the Herero language. It is also related to the Himba language. You can see this in how they name their languages. They all use a special prefix at the start. In Herero, they use Otji-. In Ovambo, they use Oshi-. This shows how these languages grew from the same roots.
