People call it Oshiwambo. It is the largest local language in Namibia. Many people speak it in Namibia and Angola. There are about one million speakers in total.

There are eight different dialects, or ways of speaking. Two of these are used for writing. They are called Kwanyama and Ndonga. These dialects help people share their culture.

Some dialects are spoken in the north. Others are spoken in the east or west.

Many people move to different towns for work. Many move to work in mines. This means they carry their language with them. In the town of Lüderitz, half the people speak Oshiwambo. This is a very long drive from the home lands.

Long ago, borders were drawn by other empires. These lines cut through tribal lands. This split the Oukwanyama people between two countries. Because of this, people move across the border often. They stay connected through their speech.
