Many people helped make the language. Settlers from Europe brought Dutch. People from Africa and Asia added their own words. This included words from Malay and Khoisan.

In the past, some people did not respect the language. They called it "kitchen Dutch." They thought it was not a real language. This changed over time. In 1925, the government said it was a real language. People worked hard to make it official. They wrote books, dictionaries, and even the Bible in Afrikaans. This helped show it was a proper language. Today, many people speak it. It is spoken in South Africa and Namibia. Some people even speak it in Argentina.
