The Maji Maji Rebellion was a large uprising in German East Africa. This area is part of what we call Tanzania today.

The conflict began because of how the German rulers treated local people. They forced many villages to grow cotton to sell to other countries. This was a hard job because cotton needs a lot of water. Most of the land in that region was actually quite dry. This made it very difficult for people to grow enough food for themselves.

Life changed quickly for the families living there. The German government also required people to pay head taxes. Many men were forced to leave their homes to work on roads. This meant women had to take on new roles in the village. New laws to protect forests also caused problems for the people. For example, there were more wild pigs that ate the food crops. These many rules made life very hard for everyone in the community.

In 1905, a man named Kinjikitile Ngwale started a movement. He was a spirit medium who believed a snake spirit called Hongo spoke to him.

He gave people a special liquid called maji. This was water mixed with millet seeds and castor oil. He told his followers that this water would turn bullets into water. Many people believed this and felt brave enough to fight. They marched from their villages wearing millet stalks on their foreheads.

The fighting was very intense between 1905 and 1907. The rebels used spears and arrows to fight the German soldiers.

The Germans had much stronger weapons like machine guns. At a place called Mahenge, thousands of warriors attacked a German fort. The German soldiers used their guns to stop the large groups. To stop the rebellion, Governor Gustav Adolf von Götzen used a harsh plan. His troops destroyed villages and burned many food sources. This was called a scorched-earth policy to make the rebels give up.

The war ended in August 1907, but it left many scars. Between 75,000 and 300,000 people died during this time. Most of these deaths were caused by a great famine. This hunger happened because the food crops were destroyed. Some people call this period the Great Hunger. Later, Tanzanian leaders looked back at this event as a way people tried to unite. It showed a strong desire to be free from foreign rule.
