Between 1896 and 1897, a war broke out in a place now called Zimbabwe.

The Matabele and Shona people fought against the British South Africa Company, or BSAC.

A spiritual leader called the Mlimo helped start the fight. He told the people that the settlers caused droughts and pests. This made the people very angry. The war began in March 1896.

Many settlers stayed in the town of Bulawayo. They built walls made of wagons and sandbags to stay safe.

They also used barbed wire for defense. The Matabele warriors were near the town, but they did not attack the walls.

To end the war, leaders wanted to find the Mlimo. Two scouts, Frederick Russell Burnham and Bonar Armstrong, went to find him. They went to a sacred cave in the Matobo Hills.

Burnham shot and killed the man in the cave.

Some people thought this man was the real Mlimo. Others thought the leaders were wrong. The war continued for a long time before it ended in October 1897.
