Kinjikitile Ngwale was a leader in a place now called Tanzania. He was part of the Matumbi people. In 1904, he said a spirit spoke to him. He called this spirit Hongo. He said Hongo took the form of a snake. Kinjikitile also said he spoke to a god named Bokera. He wanted many different groups to join together. He wanted them to fight against German rule. This led to the Maji Maji Rebellion. He gave his followers a special water. It was water mixed with millet and castor oil. He said this water would protect them from bullets. People also wore millet stalks on their heads. They used spears, arrows, and cap guns. The fight began in July 1905. It started when people destroyed a cotton field. German troops arrested Kinjikitile after a fight. He died in August 1905. His brother kept his work going. The rebellion lasted until 1907. Today, many people see him as a hero. He helped people start to feel like one nation.
