He lived in a place called Natal. The British leaders there made a new tax. This was a poll tax. It was hard for poor families to pay. Many Zulu people were already struggling. They had lost many cows to a sickness. They also had less land to farm.

Bhambatha led his people to fight the rules. He used the Nkandla forest as a base. He led small attacks against the colonial forces. The government sent many soldiers to stop him. In June, they surrounded his group at Mome Gorge. This was a very hard battle. Many Zulus died in the fighting. Between 3,000 and 4,000 Zulus lost their lives. About 36 colonial soldiers also died.

An Indian lawyer named Gandhi was there too. At that time, he helped the government. He wanted Indians to show they were good citizens. Later in life, he changed his mind. He said the fight was like a man hunt. Today, South Africa calls Bhambatha a hero.
