Great Trek

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Long ago, many people moved across South Africa. This was called the Great Trek. It began around 1836. These people were called Boers. They lived in the Cape Colony. The British ruled that land. But the Boers did not like British rule. The British made new laws. They made English the main language. They also ended slavery in 1834. Many Boers relied on slave labor for their farms. This made the Boers very unhappy. They wanted to live by their own rules. They wanted to be free from British control.

They traveled in big wagons. They called themselves voortrekkers. This word means pioneers. About 12,000 people joined the trek. They moved into the deep interior. They wanted to find new land for farming. This trip changed the area forever. The Boers started new lands called republics. These included the Transvaal and the Orange Free State.
