Many things caused these changes. Trade in ivory helped some leaders get very rich. They used this wealth to build large armies. At the same time, a long drought hit the land. There was not enough rain for crops. This made food very hard to find.

Some leaders fought to take grain and cattle from others. This helped their own people survive the hunger. One famous leader was King Shaka. He helped the Zulu kingdom grow very large. Other groups, like the Ndwandwe, also fought for control. These wars made many people flee their homes. Some moved far away to find safety. These movements helped create new kingdoms and new ways of living. The map of the land changed forever.
