For a long time, the Boers wanted to rule themselves. In 1877, Britain took control of the Transvaal. This made the Boers very angry. They felt Britain broke old rules. One big problem was taxes. A man named Piet Bezuidenhout refused to pay a tax. This event helped start the war on December 16, 1880.

The Boers did not have a regular army. Instead, they formed groups called commandos. These were farmers who were expert marksmen. They used hunting rifles to shoot from cover. They were very good at riding horses.
