This land is now part of Zimbabwe. The Ndebele people had a king named Lobengula. A group called the British South Africa Company also wanted the land.

Lobengula tried to avoid a war. He knew the company had new weapons. One weapon was the Maxim gun.

This gun was very powerful. It could fire many bullets very fast.

Conflict started when a raiding party went into Shona land. The company officials said the Ndebele must leave. The Ndebele did not leave. This led to a large fight. The company's guns were too strong for the Ndebele warriors. Many Ndebele people were killed in the battles.

King Lobengula had to leave his home city, Bulawayo. The city was burned during the fight. The company then built a new city on the ruins. Later, the land was named Rhodesia. This was named after Cecil Rhodes. He was a leader of the company.
