To understand the war, we must look at how the land changed. In the 1800s, Britain wanted to control more of southern Africa. They wanted to protect trade routes to India. They also wanted to control new riches like diamonds. In 1867, diamonds were found near the Vaal River. This discovery brought many people to the area. It also brought the British closer to the Boer lands. The Boers were Dutch-speaking farmers who lived in the interior. They had moved away from the coast to find their own space.

Many years of tension led to the actual fighting. In 1877, Britain took control of the Transvaal Republic. This was called annexation. The Transvaal was having money problems at that time. A man named T. F. Burgers was the president. The British sent a man named Sir Theophilus Shepstone to help. However, Britain decided to rule the land directly. This made the Boers very unhappy. They felt Britain broke previous treaties. One man, Piet Bezuidenhout, refused to pay a new tax. This small event helped spark the rebellion.

The two sides fought in very different ways. The Boers did not have a regular army. Instead, they formed groups called commandos. These were civilian farmers who acted as soldiers. They were expert marksmen because they were hunters. Most Boers used single-shot rifles like the Westley Richards. They wore simple, dark clothes that hid them in the land. They were also expert riders on horseback. The British soldiers wore bright red jackets. They used the Martini-Henry rifle. They mostly practiced firing in large groups on command.

The war lasted for about ten weeks. The Boers used their skills to win. They used stealth and moved quickly. They could shoot accurately from a hiding spot. The British relied on strict discipline and formations. This made the British easy targets for the Boer marksmen. By March 1881, the war ended. The Transvaal gained its independence back. This history shows how people fight to keep their way of life. It also shows how new discoveries can change a country forever.
