His life changed many people and helped shape a whole nation.

Botha was a general during the Second Boer War. He fought in many battles like Colenso and Spion Kop. He later became the commander-in-chief for the Transvaal Boers. One famous story says he captured Winston Churchill during a battle. Churchill did not know who captured him until many years later. However, some newer sources say other soldiers actually did that job.

After the war ended, Botha worked hard for peace. He helped sign the Treaty of Vereeniging in 1902. He traveled to Europe to find money to help his people. He wanted the Transvaal to be a calm and wealthy place again. In 1904, he and Jan Smuts started the Het Volk Party. This group helped the people ask for their own government.

In 1910, the Union of South Africa was officially formed. Botha was chosen as its first prime minister. He started the South African Party in 1911 with Jan Smuts. He worked closely with the British Empire. Botha also wanted to keep black traditions alive. This choice eventually led to the separation of black and white people.
