Smuts grew up on a farm in the Cape Colony.

He was born on May 24, 1870. His parents were Jacobus and Catharina Smuts. They were respected farmers in the area. At first, Jan was meant to work on the farm. This was a common rule for families back then. However, his older brother died in 1882. This meant Jan could go to school instead. He worked very hard to catch up with other students. He later went to a famous college in England. He studied law at Christ's College in Cambridge. He was a very brilliant student there.

This was called the Second Boer War. It started in 1899 and lasted until 1902. Smuts served as an officer in a group called a commando. He was very good at quick, moving fights. He helped his side avoid much larger armies. After the war ended, he helped negotiate a peace treaty. This treaty was called the Treaty of Vereeniging. This treaty changed how the land was ruled. It brought different areas into the British Empire. Later, he helped create the Union of South Africa in 1910.

Smuts was also a famous thinker. He came up with a new idea called "holism."

Holism is the idea that parts work together to make a whole. He wrote a book about this in 1926. The book was called "Holism and Evolution." Other smart people, like Alfred Adler, studied his work. Smuts believed this idea applied to many things. It could apply to science, people, and even society. He thought the whole was more than just the sum of its parts. This was a very big idea for his time.

However, Smuts also held views that were not fair to everyone. He supported racial segregation, which kept people apart. This was a very hard part of his history. At the end of his life, he tried to change some of these rules. He died on September 11, 1950.
