This nickname was because he had a very tough political style. He was a key leader during the era of apartheid.

Botha's career grew through many different government roles. He first worked as a political organizer for the National Party. In 1948, he was elected as a member of Parliament for George. He later became the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs in 1958. By 1961, he was the Minister of Community Development and Coloured Affairs. In this job, he oversaw the forced removal of people from their homes.

He also served as the Minister of Defence for over 15 years.

His early life shaped how he thought about the world. Botha was born on January 12, 1916, on a small farm. His family lived in the Orange Free State province. His father had fought in the Second Boer War. Botha studied law at Grey University College in Bloemfontein. However, he left school at age twenty to enter politics.

He wanted to help the Afrikaner people gain more control.

As a leader, Botha focused heavily on the military. He wanted to make the South African Defense Forces very strong. He increased military spending to a huge amount. At one point, it used 20% of the national budget. He also helped start a program for nuclear weapons. Botha used the idea of "total onslaught" to explain his views. He believed South Africa was fighting a struggle against communism during the Cold War.

Even though he was a hardline leader, he tried some small changes. In 1983, he introduced the Tricameral Parliament. This gave some political representation to Coloured and Indian South Africans. However, Black South Africans were still excluded from this system. This caused a lot of protests and unrest inside the country. International pressure also grew against his government. Botha resigned in 1989 after he suffered a stroke. He died on October 31, 2006, at the age of 90.
