He was born on a farm in 1916. He grew up in a family that was very proud of their culture. Botha studied law but left school to work in politics. He joined the National Party. This group made the rules for apartheid.

Apartheid was a system of unfair laws. These laws kept people apart based on their skin color. Botha helped make these laws stronger. He was a minister for many years. He oversaw forced removals. This meant moving people from their homes to new areas.

Botha became Prime Minister in 1978. People called him "The Big Crocodile." This was because he was a very tough leader. He spent a lot of money on the military. He also worked on a plan for nuclear weapons.

In 1984, he became the first State President. Many people protested his rules. Other countries also put pressure on South Africa. Botha had a stroke in 1989. He resigned from his job after that. He died in 2006 at age 90.
