He served as the Prime Minister from 1958 until 1966. Many people call him the "architect of apartheid." Apartheid was a system of laws that kept people apart based on their race. He wanted to make sure white people held all the power. This system was built into the very laws of the country. It changed how everyone lived their daily lives.

Verwoerd used many different ways to build this system. First, he worked as the Minister of Native Affairs starting in 1950. In this job, he wrote many new laws to control people. He created the Population Registration Act and the Group Areas Act in 1950. He also wrote the Bantu Education Act in 1953. These laws decided where people could live and how they were taught. He believed different races should develop in separate ways.

Before becoming Prime Minister, he was an editor for a newspaper called Die Transvaler. He used the paper to share his ideas about Afrikaner nationalism. As a leader, he was very strict with his power. He banned groups like the African National Congress. He also put many people in prison to stop them from protesting.

Verwoerd's actions had a huge impact on the whole world. Because of his laws, the United Nations spoke out against South Africa. They passed a resolution in 1961 to condemn apartheid. This caused other countries to stop trading with South Africa. His leadership ended in a sudden and violent way. In 1966, a man named Dimitri Tsafendas attacked him in Parliament. Verwoerd died shortly after that attack on 6 September 1966.
