He lived through many big changes in his country. He helped Suriname become its own independent nation. People remember him as a wise and calm leader. He was even named the most important politician in Suriname in 1999. His life shows how one person can serve many roles. He was a teacher, a scout, and a president.

Ferrier began his career by helping others learn. He trained to be a teacher in his home city. He also helped start the Boy Scouts in Suriname. He became the very first Chief Scout for the country. At only 16 years old, he was already teaching in the Saramacca District. He started a scout group there that still exists today. It is now called the Johan Ferrier group.

His path into politics started many years ago. In 1946, he helped found the National Party of Suriname. At that time, Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands. Ferrier went to Amsterdam to study how people learn. He earned a doctorate there in 1950. When he returned home, he worked in education and government. He served as prime minister from 1955 to 1958. He also worked as the interior minister during those years.

Major changes happened for Suriname in 1975. Before that year, Ferrier served as the governor. On November 25, 1975, Suriname gained its independence. This meant the country was no longer ruled by the Netherlands. Ferrier was sworn in as the first president of the new nation. He held this role until 1980. In 1980, a coup changed the government. This event caused Ferrier to resign from his post. Henk Chin A Sen became the next president.

Ferrier spent his later years in a town called Oegstgeest. He lived there with his relatives in the Netherlands. He loved sharing stories about a spider named Anansi. He even told these stories on Dutch television. A book called Het Grote Anansi Boek was released in 1986. Ferrier died in 2010 at the age of 99. His daughter started a fund in his name. This fund helps with schools and culture in Suriname.
