Maga was born on August 10, 1916, to a peasant family in Parakou. He grew up in a home with a Bariba mother and a Voltaic father. His early life included many different schools in places like Bohicon and Abomey. He even studied at a school in Dakar. Later, he became a teacher in Natitingou. Through his work, he gained influence with many people. He worked hard to help those who had not been to school.

Politics in Dahomey was often split into different regional groups. These groups were based on where people lived and their ethnic backgrounds. Maga formed a group called the Northern Ethnic Group. This group later became the Dahomey Democratic Rally. In 1951, he was elected to the French National Assembly. This was a place where leaders helped make laws. During this time, he worked with other leaders to represent his people. He also served as the Secretary of State of Labor in 1957. These roles helped him prepare for bigger jobs later on.

In 1959, Maga became the premier of Dahomey. This was a very busy time for the country. People were deciding if they wanted to be independent from France. A vote was held in September 1959 to decide the country's future. The people chose to become a semi-autonomous state. This meant Dahomey would have more control over itself. On August 1, 1960, Dahomey finally gained full independence. Maga was then appointed as the first president of the new nation.

He was officially elected to this post on December 11, 1960.

Being president was a very hard job for Maga. The economy was struggling and many people did not have work. In January 1962, he started a four-year plan to help. He wanted to grow more food by having young people work on farms. However, there were many disagreements between different political leaders. This led to a failed plot against him in May 1961. Later, in 1963, big riots broke out across the country. These riots became so serious that the army leader, Christophe Soglo, took control in October. He made Maga resign from the presidency.

After he left office, Maga's life had many changes. He served on a three-man Presidential Council starting in 1970. This council included other leaders like Sourou Migan Apithy and Justin Ahomadégbé-Tomêtin. But in 1972, a man named Mathieu Kérékou took power in a coup.

This event meant Maga and the other council members were sent to prison. They stayed there until they were released in 1981. Maga eventually retired from politics and lived a quiet life. He died on May 8, 2000. His story shows how much work it takes to lead a new nation.
