He was the first President of a country called Upper Volta. Today, we know this place as Burkina Faso. Maurice was born on December 31, 1921, in a town called Koudougou. His parents were Mossi peasants. His name, Naoua Laguemba, actually means "he comes to unite them." This name seemed to fit his life later on.

As a young boy, Maurice had a very strong interest in Christianity. He wanted to become a priest one day. To study, he went to a famous school called the Minor Seminary of Pabré.

This school was very important in his country. It trained many priests and many people for government jobs. While at school, Maurice met many future leaders of his nation. He made close friends with people like Joseph Ki-Zerbo and Pierre Tapsoba. However, he left the school in 1939 without graduating.

After his time in school, Maurice started a professional career. He worked as a shipping clerk for the French Colonial Administration. This was a prestigious job that offered him success and security. He worked in different towns like Dedougou and Koudougou. During World War II, he was sent to Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire.

In Abidjan, he worked to grow his social standing. He also saw how some businessmen treated workers unfairly on large plantations. These experiences helped him learn how much people cared about fairness.

Maurice soon moved into the world of politics. He joined many different political groups over the years. In 1948, he achieved something very big for his age. He was elected as a grand counsellor for French West Africa.

However, his time as president ended on January 3, 1966. This happened after a nationwide strike by workers. Maurice lived until September 15, 1993.
