He was a military officer and a revolutionary. He served as the first President of Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987. Before he was President, he was the Prime Minister of a country called Upper Volta. He wanted to change how his country worked for everyone. His ideas were part of a movement called the people's democratic revolution. Many people saw him as a hero for his many big ideas.

Sankara worked hard to make his country self-sufficient. This means he wanted the country to provide for itself. He started many programs to help the land and the people. He fought to stop the desert from spreading by planting over 10 million trees.

He also led a huge vaccination program for children. This helped stop diseases like measles and yellow fever. He helped build new schools, health centers, and water reservoirs for everyone to use.

Sankara’s journey to leadership began long ago in Yako. He was born on 21 December 1949 to Joseph and Marguerite Sankara. He was very good at math and French in school. Even though his parents wanted him to be a priest, he chose the military. He went to a military academy in Ouagadougou when he was 17.

While studying, he learned about history and new ways to help farmers grow more food.

In 1983, Sankara became the President at age 33. He made many big changes to the nation. In 1984, he changed the name of the country to Burkina Faso. This name means "land of the upright people."

He even wrote the new national anthem himself. He also lived a very simple life to show he was not greedy. He rode a bike to work and did not use air conditioning in his office.

Sankara's ideas changed many things, but they also caused problems. Some leaders and other countries did not like his new rules. In 1987, he was assassinated by troops led by Blaise Compaoré. Compaoré took over the leadership of the country after that. Many years later, in 2021, a court found Compaoré guilty of the murder. Sankara is still remembered today as an icon for many nations in Africa.
