Blaise Compaoré was a major political leader in Burkina Faso.

He served as the second president of the country for many years. His rule lasted from 1987 until 2014. This made him the longest-serving president in the nation's history. People have many different views on his time in power. Some say he brought stability and development to the land. Others criticize him for his record on human rights and wealth inequality.

Compaoré's journey began in the military. He was born in Ziniaré on February 3, 1951. He joined the armed forces when he was 20 years old in 1971. He studied at the Yaoundé Military Academy in Cameroon. During his service, he became a close friend of Thomas Sankara. Sankara was the first president of Burkina Faso. Compaoré worked as his deputy and as the Minister of Justice.

Power changed hands through a series of events called coups. In 1983, Compaoré helped organize a coup to remove a leader. Later, in 1987, he led another coup to take control. During this second event, Thomas Sankara was killed. Compaoré took office at age 36. He called his new approach a "rectification" of previous policies. He wanted to change the direction the country was moving.

Compaoré stayed in power through many election years. He won elections in 1991, 1998, 2005, and 2010. However, many people did not think these votes were free and fair. In 1989, he founded a group called the ODP–MT. This later merged into the Congress for Democracy and Progress in 1996. He also faced challenges like protests over high living costs in 2008.

His time as leader ended because of a large uprising. In 2014, his party wanted to change the constitution. This change would allow him to run for office again. Many people were very upset by this plan. They held massive protests and stormed the parliament building in Ouagadougou. Compaoré resigned and fled to the Ivory Coast. In 2022, a court sentenced him to life in prison for his role in Sankara's death.
