Joseph Saidu Momoh was a leader in Sierra Leone. He was born on January 26, 1937, in Binkolo. His family belonged to the Limba ethnic group. They were Christians and moved to Freetown later in his childhood. As a student, Momoh was very active in sports. He played tennis, basketball, and volleyball. He even played competitive football for teams like Blackpool FC.

Momoh began a career in the civil service in 1956. He worked as a third grade clerk for two years. In 1958, he decided to join the military instead. He trained in several places like Ghana and Nigeria. He also traveled to the United Kingdom for more training. By 1963, he became a second lieutenant. He rose through the ranks to become a major-general in 1983.

In 1985, Momoh became the leader of the All People's Congress party. Later that year, he succeeded Siaka Stevens as president. He was the only candidate in the election held on October 8, 1985. Momoh served as the second president of Sierra Leone. He ruled from November 1985 until April 1992. During his time, he worked to stop corruption in the government. He tried to stop people from stealing money or using their power unfairly.

His presidency faced many difficult challenges. The economy was in a very bad state when he started. The country struggled to pay for gasoline and fuel oil. Many people went without electricity for months. In 1991, a rebel group called the Revolutionary United Front started a civil war. Momoh tried to help by creating a new constitution. This new rule allowed for more than one political party. Leaders like George H.W. Bush praised these democratic steps.

In April 1992, a coup d'état happened in the country. A 25-year-old army captain named Valentine Strasser led the group. These soldiers were unhappy about unpaid salaries and lack of supplies. They marched to Freetown to take control of the government. Momoh had to leave Sierra Leone to find safety. He moved to the neighboring country of Guinea. He lived there as a guest until he died on August 3, 2003.
